Steinway East

A fictional collaboration between London-based minimalist composer Max Ricter and the London Steinway Hall prompted the design for an East London branch of the Hall. Inspired by Max Richter and choreographer Wayne McGregor’s ballet Infra—which in turn was inspired by the 2005 London bombings—the shelf and shop aim to communicate the delicate nature of the subject matter and the music itself.

Taking cues from the piano’s anatomy, the altar-like piece pays homage to the minimalism represented in both the music and ballet. Curved forms present in and around the piano, such as the piano hammer and body as well as rows of repeated line forms, are echoed in the shelf design and the rest of the interior space. The shelf holds a piano hammer, score book for Infra, and a photohraph of a performance of the ballet.
