The Divine Comedy
This pub directly alludes to Dante’s epic poem chronicling the journey from hell through purgatory and finally to heaven.
The basement level represents hell, and is a dark and individualistic space quite reminescent of existing old-fashioned pubs. The first floor, with its cathedral-like arched vaults, represents purgatory—a forest of columns that does not fully reveal the space and the people in it. Finally, the top level boasts a garden and communal space, representing heaven, the garden of earthly pleasures, and suggests that, ultimately, a common utopia can only be achieved through seeing, talking, and understanding each other in the same space.
